In Memoriam

romani-curtain.jpg

A lady called Sherrie Smith an active member of the Romany Gypsy community

in England, was one of the main organisers of the first trip to Poland for the

Memorial Service held each year at the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Death camp,

Where so many Roma and Sinti were murdered on the 2nd of August of 1944.

She took with her a number of young Romany students so they could  see where the Roma and Sinti died and learn the history of the Roma Holocaust.

Before Sherrie left I asked if she would do me a little favour and take with her a memoriam Poem  and place it down with the  flowers and wreaths and she kindly did so. Every year after that I have written a Memoriam to the victims of the Roma Holocaust known as the Porajmos or  the Devouring.

What you will see below are those poems that  were taken by Sherrie to the Memorial of Auschwitz, including this years which marks the 75th anniversary of the 2nd of August 1944.

75 Years ago today,

So many Roma were led away,

Down to a place where there’d be no return,

Then into the cremator their lifeless bodies to burn.

Men, Women and children Alike,

The Soldiers did not care,

 They just stood there watching,

As the stench of burning flesh filled the air.

 75 years of tears,

 Enough to fill a sea,

The last words from those left behind,

 Remember to wait for me.

 Each day they remember,

All those they have lost,

Who for a better World,

They paid a High Cost.

 For 75 years,

Those who survived,

Have relived the horrors,

That are etched deep in their mind.

Now as we all gather together,

To say our prayers with silent tears,

We will always remember and never forget,

The Holocaust its been 75 years.

This year's Memorial Holocaust Poem was read out by Cathay Birch. Due to the Corvid19 virus, no one attended the Memorium at Auschwitz, so service's were held via the internet.

May they always be remembered and may they never be forgotten.

Roma

Jewish

Many more people, human beings, perished during this horrific time in our history. Roma, Sinti, Jewish, Gay's, Black's, White, even other German's. Anyone that did not fit the arion mold that the Natzi's regime thought everyone needed to be, to purify their world, in their eyes, and in their way.

May we never forget the past and those that came before us. Let history detour us from the same failures and persecutions of our predecessors.

Rest in Peace
