16TH MAY
DAY OF RESISTANCE
May the 16th Marks the Anniversary of the night when in 1944 over 6,000 Roma and Sinti, Stood up to the Nazi SS in Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp.
By fighting off the Nazi Soldiers they managed to delay the Liquidation of the Gypsy Camp (Zigeunlager) They united together and fought off the Soldiers who had been sent to take them on their final journey to the Gas Chambers.
Word had reached them that the soldiers were comming to take them so the mobilized and united together to fight the Soldies when they came, They made weapons from whatever was available and could be used in defence of themselves.
Some would fight back in other ways one of which was singing, They would sing a song which later became recognised as the Roma National Anthem Gelem Gelem.
2019 will be the 75th Anniversary of The Roma Holocaust when on the night of the 2nd of August approximately 3,000 Roma were Killed either in the gas chambers or were shot we must never forget that Roma and Sinti Men, Women and children gave their today's so we could have our Tomorrows!
THEY GAVE THEIR TODAY SO WE COULD HAVE TOMORROW!
We remember each year the night they died,
We remember the tears the survivors cried.
Truth hidden from history buried in the past,
But now that truth has come out at last.
They were born Roma,
Not the right class,
So their birth right
Condemned them to die by the Gas.
How many died there.
we shall never know.
We only have survivors memories,
And old pictures to show.
So on this remembrance day,
when we remember the pain and the sorrow,
Remember our Ancestors gave their today's,
So we could have Tomorrow .
In Memory of all the Roma and Sinti who died at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
